Bihar’s Champaran region is set for a major dairy infrastructure boost with a proposed ₹350-crore dairy plant having a processing capacity of 4 lakh litres per day. The project was highlighted at the Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fishery Entrepreneur Development Fair in Motihari, where NDDB Chairman Dr. Meenesh Shah participated alongside MP Radha Mohan Singh and Bihar Government Secretary Sheershat Kapil Ashok.
The plant is expected to strengthen milk processing, marketing and local supply chains while creating direct and indirect employment across procurement, transportation, processing and allied services. The investment comes as milk collection in the region continues to expand, increasing the need for institutional processing capacity.
The Bapudham Milk Producer Organization, established in 2017 with NDDB support, currently collects around 1.5 lakh litres of milk daily from more than 1,500 villages across Champaran and adjoining districts. More than 67,000 farmers are associated with the organisation, with over ₹1,000 crore transferred directly into farmers’ bank accounts since its inception against milk supplies.
The dairy expansion also includes a focus on productivity. Breed-improvement initiatives are planned across 300 villages, while NDDB is strengthening automatic milk collection systems, bulk milk coolers and other village-level infrastructure; Bihar is also developing a new semen facility that will offer sex-sorted semen alongside conventional semen.
The broader objective is to build a stronger dairy value chain in Champaran by combining processing infrastructure, farmer ownership, breeding technology, village-level collection and market access. The initiative aligns with Bihar’s dairy-development agenda and the Centre’s ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’ vision of expanding cooperative participation at the village level.
