Gujarat has intensified its crackdown on dairy analogue products, warning that food business operators manufacturing or selling non-compliant analogue dairy products could face suspension or cancellation of their FSSAI licences for violating food safety regulations. The action follows a series of inspections by the Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA), which uncovered widespread misuse of dairy analogue products, particularly analogue paneer, cheese and butter, being sold or served as genuine dairy products without proper disclosure.
Authorities stated that businesses found misbranding or misrepresenting analogue products as milk-based dairy products would face stringent enforcement under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, with licensing action in addition to legal penalties. Officials emphasised that food business operators—including manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, hotels, restaurants and caterers—must ensure clear product identification and regulatory compliance to prevent consumer deception.
The warning comes amid growing nationwide regulatory action against dairy analogues, with several states introducing stricter controls to improve transparency, food safety and consumer protection. Gujarat has also strengthened surveillance and inspections across the dairy supply chain, reinforcing that repeated violations or deliberate mislabelling could result in cancellation of licences and prosecution under food safety laws. The development reflects India's increasing regulatory focus on protecting the integrity of dairy products, ensuring authentic milk-based foods are clearly distinguished from analogue alternatives, and strengthening consumer confidence through stricter enforcement and traceability.
