Zomato has introduced a zero-tolerance policy against the listing and sale of dishes containing analogue dairy products, including analogue cheese, analogue paneer and other dairy substitutes, on its platform. The policy has taken effect immediately, with Zomato saying the move is intended to strengthen food quality, transparency and compliance with food-safety requirements.
Under the new policy, dishes that restaurant partners have identified as containing analogue dairy have already been delisted from Zomato. The platform has directed restaurants to take immediate corrective action, including reviewing their menus and replacing analogue dairy ingredients with natural dairy products or removing the affected dishes where an immediate switch is not possible.
Zomato has also asked restaurant partners to verify supplier product labels and ingredient declarations to ensure that the ingredients used in dishes are accurately represented on their digital menus. This puts greater responsibility on restaurants to know what is actually being supplied and used in their kitchens.
The company has warned that restaurants that remain non-compliant may be delisted from the platform. Zomato said the initiative forms part of its broader focus on healthier food choices and greater transparency for consumers, consistent with applicable regulatory requirements.
The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of analogue dairy products and food labelling in India, including recent enforcement action against products marketed as paneer despite being made with non-dairy ingredients. For the dairy and food-service industry, the development signals increasing pressure for ingredient traceability, accurate menu declarations and clear differentiation between genuine dairy products and dairy analogues.
