UP Women Drive ₹5,000 Cr Dairy Boom

Rural women in Uttar Pradesh are leading a powerful dairy transformation, generating an estimated ₹5,000 crore business through organised milk production and procurement networks. Women-led groups across 31 districts are collectively procuring around 10 lakh litres of milk per day, significantly boosting both production and rural incomes.
The initiative, supported by the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission, has mobilised lakhs of women from over 6,000 villages, integrating them into structured dairy value chains. These women, organised through Self-Help Groups (SHGs), are actively engaged in milk procurement, processing, and marketing, transforming from labour participants into full-scale rural entrepreneurs.
Beyond income generation, the model is driving broader socio-economic impact—reducing rural migration, strengthening local economies, and creating employment at the grassroots level. The scale and structure of this network highlight how policy support, training, and financial access can unlock large-scale value creation in the dairy sector.
With strong institutional backing and expanding participation, this women-led dairy ecosystem is emerging as a key growth engine for the state’s rural economy, with the potential to further scale production and value-added opportunities in the coming years.
