Telugu States Clash Over ‘Vijaya Dairy’ Sales

A fresh dispute has erupted between the governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh over the use of the “Vijaya Dairy” brand logo and the sale of its dairy products in Telangana, highlighting continuing tensions between the two states after their 2014 bifurcation. Telangana authorities have raised objections to dairy products from Andhra Pradesh being marketed in the state under the Vijaya brand, citing concerns over branding, jurisdiction and consumer confusion.
The issue has intensified as products such as milk, ghee and other dairy items linked to Andhra-based entities continue to be sold in Telangana markets, particularly in Hyderabad. Telangana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation (TGDDCF) leaders allege that some of these products are being marketed through private networks and may lack clear labelling about manufacturing origin, creating confusion among consumers who associate the Vijaya brand with the Telangana cooperative dairy network.
Andhra-side officials, however, have rejected the allegations and maintain that their dairy products meet required quality standards and can be sold across markets. The dispute underscores the complexities surrounding legacy dairy brands that existed before the formation of Telangana and the challenge of managing cooperative institutions and brand identities across state borders.
