Punjab Budget Boosts Dairy, Crop Diversification
The Punjab Budget 2026-27 has allocated ₹15,377 crore for agriculture and allied sectors, with several measures aimed at strengthening farming, dairy and sustainable agriculture, according to Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian. The budget includes ₹100 crore to ensure fair milk procurement prices for dairy farmers, helping protect them from market volatility.
To tackle stubble burning and promote sustainable practices, the government has earmarked ₹600 crore for crop residue management. Support for water-saving farming methods also continues, with ₹40 crore allocated for Direct Seeded Rice (DSR).
In addition, the state will promote crop diversification through a pilot programme encouraging farmers to shift from paddy to kharif maize across six districts, offering an incentive of ₹17,500 per hectare, with ₹15 crore allocated for the initiative.
The budget also provides a 33% subsidy on Bt cotton hybrid seeds recommended by Punjab Agricultural University to support cotton cultivation, while ₹7,715 crore has been allocated for agricultural power subsidies. Khudian said these initiatives are aimed at improving farmers’ incomes, promoting sustainable farming and ensuring long-term prosperity for Punjab’s agriculture sector.
