PM Modi Gifts Three Award-Winning Indian Cheeses

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted Swiss President Guy Parmelin three award-winning Indian cheeses during their meeting in New Delhi, showcasing India’s growing capabilities in artisanal and specialty cheese production.

The three cheeses presented were Gulmarg, Konark and Yeoor, each reflecting international cheesemaking techniques while incorporating distinctive characteristics and flavours.

Gulmarg, a French-style Brie made from pasteurised cow’s milk, has a soft, creamy texture, a snowy-white rind and earthy, mushroom-like flavour notes. It received a Super Gold award at the 2026 Mundial do Queijo do Brasil.

Konark is a French Tomme-style cheese with a rustic natural rind, supple texture and earthy, savoury flavours with a lemony finish. It won Gold at the 2023 World Cheese Awards in Norway and later received a Silver award in Switzerland in 2025.

Yeoor is an aged mountain-style cheese inspired by Swiss Gruyère. Matured for around eight to nine months, it develops nutty, sweet and herbaceous flavours. Its rind is decorated with rose petals and fennel, giving it an Indian-Alpine character, while its melting properties make it suitable for preparations such as fondue and grilled dishes.

The cheese gift formed part of a broader India-Switzerland engagement during President Parmelin’s three-day state visit. Modi and Parmelin discussed cooperation in areas including trade, investment, mobility, infrastructure, defence, nuclear energy and critical technologies.

The presentation of the three cheeses also provided an international showcase for India’s emerging artisanal cheese sector. The gesture combined culinary diplomacy with recognition of Indian dairy innovation, particularly the ability of Indian cheesemakers to adapt global cheese styles while developing products with distinctive local characteristics.

The visit also comes amid the strengthening of India-EFTA economic ties. The Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) between India and the European Free Trade Association—comprising Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway—has created opportunities for greater trade and investment, including in food processing and other sectors.
