The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) has strongly supported the reintroduction of the Dairy PRIDE Act, calling for stricter enforcement of labeling rules to prevent plant-based products from using dairy terms such as “milk,” “cheese,” and “yogurt.” (Oklahoma Farm Report)
NMPF stated that the DAIRY PRIDE Act would direct the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to enforce existing standards of identity, ensuring that only products derived from dairy animals can use traditional dairy terminology.
The federation highlighted that plant-based imitation products are “not nutritionally equivalent” to real milk and have been allowed to create consumer confusion by implying parity with dairy, which it described as a public health concern.
Under the proposed legislation, products making inaccurate dairy claims would be deemed “misbranded,” and the FDA would be required to issue nationwide enforcement guidance within 90 days.
NMPF also emphasized that dairy products provide 13 essential nutrients—including calcium, potassium, and vitamin D—reinforcing the need to protect consumer understanding and ensure transparency in labeling.
The organization welcomed bipartisan support for the bill, crediting lawmakers for addressing what it sees as a long-standing gap in regulatory enforcement impacting both consumers and dairy farmers.
