New Genomic Testing Boosts Cross-Bred Dairy Herd Performance
A major development in dairy genetics has emerged with the introduction of genomic testing for cross-bred dairy cattle, a tool that was previously limited to purebreds but is now accessible for mixed-heritage animals thanks to a new genotyping method. This service is part of NMR’s GeneEze offering, leveraging data from AHDB Dairy’s female genotypes to ensure reliable genomic evaluations for cross-bred cows and heifers.
Producers can now send tissue samples shortly after birth and receive genomic results within six to eight weeks, with tests priced the same as those for purebred animals. These results are published in AHDB’s genetic herd reports and accessed via the Herd Companion platform, enabling farmers to rank and analyse individual animals across health and production traits regardless of breed mix.
Each animal receives a spring or autumn calving index that integrates production and health traits, allowing farmers to focus selection on the most profitable and resilient animals for their system. As genomic tools become more widely adopted, they are helping producers make data-driven breeding decisions, refining herd genetics and improving long-term performance and profitability.
