Madhya Pradesh has intensified its food-safety enforcement ahead of the festive season, ordering the nationwide recall of 42 food products and restricting the sale of eight other products in their respective districts following laboratory findings.
The action by the state’s Food and Drugs Administration covers ghee and spices among other products. Tests identified quality and composition irregularities in certain samples, raising concerns about possible adulteration and the authenticity of products sold to consumers.
1. Nationwide Recall Ordered for 42 Products
According to The Hitavada, authorities have directed the withdrawal of 42 products, including ghee and spices, from markets across India.
The administration has also prohibited the sale of eight other products within their respective districts.
Food businesses have been instructed to stop purchasing, storing and selling the affected products. Consumers have been advised not to use the listed products and to return existing stock to retailers.
The orders underline the importance of prompt action when laboratory testing identifies products that may not comply with food-safety requirements.
2. Laboratory Tests Flag Ghee Composition Irregularities
The reported findings include the detection of beta-sitosterol, a plant sterol that should be absent from pure ghee under the applicable standards, along with non-compliance in fatty-acid composition.
These findings can indicate the presence of vegetable oils or other foreign fats in products sold as ghee.
Pure ghee is a milk-fat product, and its identity and quality are assessed using prescribed compositional parameters. Laboratory analysis is therefore important for detecting adulteration that may not be apparent from a product’s appearance, smell or texture.
3. Products and Brands Under Scrutiny
The report names several products that failed quality tests, including:
- Anik Ghee, 200 ml, batch DGB13F26A
- Shrimool Agmark Shudh Ghee
- Amrit Shudh Ghee
- Madhusudan Desi Ghee
- Gasanta Premium Cow Ghee
- Vastu Agmark Ghee
Consumers and retailers should refer to the official recall or prohibition orders for the complete list of affected products, batches and applicable restrictions. The reported action concerns specified products and should not automatically be interpreted as applying to every product sold under each brand.
4. Indore Seizure Highlights Enforcement Activity
In a related enforcement action in Indore, officials reportedly seized 640 litres of suspected Vastu ghee, valued at nearly ₹3 lakh, from Krish Enterprises.
The seizure forms part of wider efforts to remove potentially non-compliant products from circulation.
For food businesses, the case reinforces the importance of maintaining supplier documentation, checking product and batch details, and cooperating with food-safety authorities during investigations and recalls.
5. Why Traceability Is Critical for the Dairy Industry
A food product can move through manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and online marketplaces before reaching consumers. Without reliable batch-level records, identifying and removing affected stock can become difficult.
Effective traceability helps businesses and regulators determine where a product originated, which markets received it and whether additional stock remains in circulation.
Dairy manufacturers should maintain robust quality-control systems, verify raw-material suppliers and conduct appropriate testing to ensure that products meet identity and composition standards.
What This Means for India’s Ghee Market
Ghee holds an important place in Indian households and festive food traditions. Maintaining consumer confidence depends on product authenticity, consistent quality and credible enforcement.
The Madhya Pradesh action is a reminder that food-safety compliance must extend from raw materials and manufacturing to distribution and retail.
