Manapparai Milk Society Raises Milk Price by ₹5/Litre
The Manapparai Milk Producers Cooperative Society, one of the largest milk producers’ societies in the district, has increased its direct-sale milk price by ₹5 per litre, taking the retail price from ₹50 to ₹55 per litre. The revised price came into effect on September 10.
The society has around 10,000 members in and around Manapparai and procures approximately 45,000–50,000 litres of milk per day from them. While most of the milk collected is supplied to Tiruchi District Milk Producers’ Cooperative Ltd., popularly known as Tiruchi Aavin, the society also sells milk directly to consumers and commercial customers.
The society supplies around 7,000 litres of milk each morning and evening to customers in Manapparai. Its customer base includes households as well as tea shops, hotels, hospitals, hostels and marriage functions. It also maintains a prepaid customer system under which some consumers pay their monthly milk bills in advance.
The price increase has reportedly not been well received by some consumers. One consumer questioned the decision, pointing out that the State government had not increased the retail selling price of Aavin milk even though procurement prices had been revised.
Sources associated with the cooperative system, however, said milk producers’ societies have the flexibility to supply milk to Aavin after meeting local consumer requirements. The Manapparai society first supplies its direct customers through vendors before sending the remaining milk to Aavin.
The society's decision comes after Tamil Nadu increased the procurement price paid to milk producers through cooperative societies. The procurement price for cow milk was raised from ₹38 to ₹41 per litre in August, with the government citing increasing costs of cattle feed and labour among the factors behind the revision.
The increase at Manapparai illustrates how changes in milk procurement costs can affect the economics of local cooperative societies that operate both as suppliers to Aavin and as direct sellers to consumers. It also highlights the different pricing dynamics between cooperative-level direct sales and Aavin's retail milk pricing.
