Maharashtra Milk Output Up 64% in 10 Years
Milk production in the state of Maharashtra has increased by nearly 64% over the past decade, according to the Economic Survey 2025–26. The state’s milk production rose from 101.52 lakh metric tonnes (MT) in 2015-16 to 166.26 lakh MT in 2024-25, registering a 63.8% growth during the period. Per capita availability of milk in the state also improved significantly, rising from 239 grams per day to 358 grams per day, reflecting 49.8% growth in the dairy sector.
However, the state still lags behind the national average, as the country’s per capita milk availability stands at 485 grams per day, placing Maharashtra at fifth position nationally. The survey also highlighted that per capita egg availability in the state is 65 eggs per year compared to the national average of 106 eggs (seventh rank), while per capita meat availability is 9.5 kg per year against the national average of 7.5 kg, giving the state the third rank.
The report noted that dairy farming acts as a supplementary activity to agriculture and has strong potential to generate additional income and employment for rural households while improving nutritional levels.
