KMC Raids Kolkata Markets, Seizes Stale Dairy Products

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has intensified its food-safety crackdown, conducting raids at Bowbazar’s traditional Chhana Patti and Gariahat markets and seizing and destroying stale dairy products and frozen meat. KMC enforcement and food-safety teams inspected several shops at Chhana Patti and also tested paneer samples using iodine solution to check quality and detect possible adulteration.

While paneer at most inspected shops was found to be satisfactory, officials detected old and stale khoya, chhana cakes and other dairy products allegedly being kept for sale. The products were seized and destroyed, while shop owners were warned against storing or selling stale food.

A shop was also issued a notice for allegedly operating without the required food licence or valid food-business certification. Separately, KMC teams inspected the fish and meat sections at Gariahat market, collecting and sealing fish samples for laboratory testing.

The latest action follows a wider inspection drive across Kolkata, including surprise checks at restaurants and food courts where authorities have been examining food storage conditions, hygiene and the quality of frozen products. KMC has indicated that inspections will continue across markets in the city to strengthen food safety and protect consumers.
