Karnataka Budget Boosts Dairy & Livestock Sector
The 2026-27 Karnataka State Budget announced several initiatives to strengthen the dairy and animal husbandry sector and improve farmers’ incomes. When the current government assumed office, milk was being procured from 8.75 lakh producers at 81.78 lakh litres per day, which has now increased to about 9.07 lakh milk producers supplying nearly 1 crore litres of milk daily.
The government also cleared pending incentives to dairy farmers, distributing ₹4,523 crore so far, including ₹609 crore of earlier pending payments. Under the Anugraha scheme, compensation for accidental deaths of sheep, goats and cattle has been enhanced, with ₹101 crore already distributed to 1.70 lakh beneficiaries. To expand veterinary infrastructure, the government has initiated construction of 300 veterinary institution buildings, and in 2026-27 another 100 veterinary hospital buildings will be constructed with NABARD support.
To promote livestock farming, 10,000 beneficiaries each in Belagavi and Kalaburagi divisions will receive a 25% subsidy to establish sheep and goat units, while another 10,000 beneficiaries will receive a 25% subsidy to purchase cows or buffaloes, with ₹40 crore allocated for these programmes.
The state is also expanding veterinary services by upgrading 20 taluk veterinary hospitals into polyclinics, with 15 more to be upgraded this year at a cost of ₹10 crore. Additional measures include establishing a Boer goat breeding centre in Mysuru, developing the Bandur sheep breeding centre in Kampalapura (Periyapatna taluk), organising ‘Phaladhare’ breeding camps in 1,000 gram panchayats under the “One Calf Per Year” initiative with ₹5 crore allocation, setting up animal CT-scan facilities at veterinary college hospitals in Bengaluru and Bidar, and launching Dog Birth Control Training Centres in Bengaluru and Bidar to improve animal health and welfare.
