Jigawa to Partner India for Dairy Development
The Jigawa State Government in Nigeria has announced plans to collaborate with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) of India to promote livestock development and expand dairy production in the state. The initiative was disclosed by Governor Umar Namadi while receiving a high-level NDDB delegation led by Rajesh O. Gupta during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Dutse. The visit follows the governor’s earlier engagement with Indian dairy institutions during an official trip to India last year, where discussions began on possible cooperation to transform Jigawa’s livestock sector.
Namadi said India’s dairy success offers a model worth replicating, noting that climatic conditions in India and Nigeria are “almost the same,” making it feasible to adopt similar dairy initiatives. He highlighted the importance of India’s cooperative-based dairy system, which helped transform the country into the world’s largest milk producer, and stressed that improving livestock genetics through cross-breeding and artificial insemination could significantly raise milk output in the state.
According to the governor, some cows in the region currently produce less than one litre of milk per day, but productivity could increase substantially with better breeding and genetics. The state government also expressed readiness to invest in knowledge transfer and capacity building, including sending scientists to India for training, while expecting a comprehensive proposal from NDDB by the end of the month or early next month to move the partnership to the next phase.
