India Leads Top 7 Largest Milk-Producing Countries followed by USA

Cow's milk has been seeing a significant growing demand each year. Since 1961, the global milk production has reached 918 million tons in 2021. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), global milk production has reached 929.9 million tons in 2022.

The following is a list of the 7 largest milk-producing countries in the world in 2022-2023 according to data quoted from the Our World in Data and Geeks for Geeks sites.

Largest Milk-Producing Countries

1. India

India is the largest milk-producing country in the world with a total of 208,984,430 tons of milk produced in 2022-2023. India generated 24.64 percent of the world's total milk production in 2021-2022. Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat are parts of India that contribute significantly to milk supply in India.

2. United States

In 2023, the United States produced 120,654,616 tons of milk. The United States accounts for the world’s milk production as much as the total milk production in New Zealand and Australia combined. Many dairy products are indicative of the US, such as powdered milk, cheese, butter, and liquid milk. Some areas in America that have large-scale dairy farms are California, Wisconsin, and New York.

3. Pakistan

Pakistan produced 65,785,000 tons of cow's milk in 2022-2023, making it the third-largest milk-producing country in the world. Pakistan’s dairy industry also contributes to buffalo milk production and is the leader in the buffalo milk export market. Liquid milk, ghee (clarified butter), and traditional dairy treats are some of the products of the dairy industry in Pakistan.

4. China

China produced 41,245,664 tons of cow's milk in 2023. The dairy industry is growing in this country due to population growth and changes in diet which have increased demand for milk and milk products.

5. Brazil

Brazil accounts for 5 percent of milk produced worldwide by producing 36,663,708 tons in 2023. Brazil is notable for its vast farms supported by ideal weather and cutting-edge agricultural techniques. The dairy business in Brazil is also very efficient and productive with advances in genetics, technology, and management techniques.

6. Germany

Germany produced 33,188,890 tons of milk in 2023, making it the largest milk producer in the European Union. This represents 25 percent of the milk, butter, and cheese consumed in the EU. Germany is a processor and exporter of dairy products such as butter, cheese, and milk powder in Europe.

7. Russia

Russia produces 32,333,278 tons of milk annually. In 2023, Russia produced more than 32.3 million metric tons of milk and dairy products, a 2 million increase compared to 2020. Russia is a major consumer and exporter of dairy products in the international dairy market. The Russian government also supports the dairy business by heeding sustainability, herd management, and milk quality standards.
