India has created over 9.25 crore Farmer IDs across 19 states, marking a major step toward digitising agriculture, with the government now pushing to achieve 100% coverage within the next six months through coordinated efforts between agriculture and revenue departments. (Global Agriculture)
The Farmer ID is being developed as a comprehensive digital identity, linking farmers to their land holdings, crops, livestock, and fisheries, enabling better targeting of subsidies, improved service delivery, and enhanced transparency through Aadhaar-linked systems and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
The initiative aims to go beyond beneficiaries of schemes like PM-Kisan and ensure universal inclusion of all eligible farmers, strengthening policy implementation and reducing duplication in beneficiary databases.
Officials also highlighted the role of Farmer ID in technology-driven fertiliser distribution, helping curb hoarding and black marketing while ensuring equitable access based on real-time farmer and land data.
Additionally, integration with procurement systems under schemes like PM-AASHA will enable Aadhaar-based authentication, transparent procurement, and direct payments to farmers, improving traceability and efficiency across the agri-value chain.
The large-scale rollout positions Farmer ID as a foundational pillar of data-driven agriculture, with the potential to enhance market linkages, policy precision, and overall resilience of India’s food system.
