Heritage Foods Seeks Policy Support for Dairy in FY 27 budget

Heritage Foods Seeks Policy Support for Dairy in FY 27 budget
Prefer on

Heritage Foods Ltd., a leading organised dairy company, has appealed to the government for targeted policy support in the Union Budget 2026–27 to accelerate growth in India’s organised dairy sector. Citing the positive impact of September 2025’s GST rationalisation on dairy products — which has encouraged consumers to shift toward high-protein, health-focused products such as paneer, cheese, ghee and butter — the company says now is the time to build further momentum for the sector.

In a statement ahead of Budget preparations, Brahmani Nara, Executive Director of Heritage Foods, outlined three priority areas for policy action. First, she called for subsidised access to quality cattle feed and advanced inputs such as chromosome-sorted semen to improve animal productivity — a major driver of milk output and farm incomes. Second, she highlighted the need to expand veterinary education and capacity, noting that India currently has about 68,000 registered veterinarians against an estimated requirement of 1.1–1.2 lakh to adequately support a growing dairy herd.

Third, Heritage Foods is seeking higher capital subsidies for decentralised and mini-dairy units, especially those led by women entrepreneurs, which can generate rural employment and reinforce milk procurement networks across hinterland regions. Strengthening small and medium dairy operations through policy incentives would help organised players deepen farmer integration and expand supply chains across the country.

The company also noted that government-led initiatives such as the Rashtriya Gokul Mission and the National Digital Livestock Mission are already helping integrate more than 300,000 farmers into the organised dairy ecosystem — laying the groundwork for broader industry growth if supported with further policy reforms.
