Hatsun Agro Q2 Profit Rises 6% as Higher Costs Squeeze Margins

Hatsun Agro Products Ltd., one of India's leading private-sector dairy companies, reported moderate profit growth for the second quarter of FY2026–27, as strong revenue growth was partly offset by rising operating costs.

The company's net profit increased by approximately 5.6% year-on-year to ₹115.69 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Revenue from operations climbed 19.36% to ₹2,897.64 crore, compared with ₹2,427.59 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

However, operating earnings grew much more slowly than revenue. EBITDA rose approximately 2% to ₹331 crore, while the EBITDA margin contracted to 11.4% from 13.4% a year earlier. This divergence highlights the pressure that input costs can place on profitability even when sales momentum remains strong.

Revenue Growth Outpaces Profitability

Hatsun's second-quarter results reflect continued demand for its dairy products, but the difference between revenue and profit growth remains significant.

Figures are based on reported quarterly results; EBITDA figures are rounded.

The results point to a central challenge for dairy processors: increasing sales does not necessarily translate into proportionate profit growth. Procurement expenses, agricultural input inflation, processing costs and distribution requirements can all influence margins.

Input Costs Remain a Challenge for the Dairy Sector

Hatsun Chairman R. G. Chandramogan cited geopolitical uncertainties, El Niño-related factors and inflation in agricultural input costs among the challenges facing the dairy industry.

These pressures make cost management particularly important for companies operating across milk procurement, processing, cold-chain logistics and consumer distribution. Maintaining margins requires businesses to balance procurement costs with pricing, product mix and operational efficiency.

For dairy companies, the ability to manage these factors while preserving farmer relationships and consumer demand will remain an important determinant of financial performance.

288 Crore Consumer Packs Sold in Six Months

Hatsun reported selling approximately 288 crore consumer packs during the first half of FY2026–27, averaging around 1.58 crore packs per day.

The company continues to prioritise direct consumer engagement through its brands rather than relying primarily on wholesale and bulk sales. Its consumer-facing portfolio includes Arun, Ibaco, Arokya, Hatsun, HAP Daily and Milky Moo.

A strong branded distribution network can help dairy companies build repeat purchases and improve consumer access. However, maintaining profitability at scale also depends on efficient procurement, production planning and distribution.

Expansion into Maharashtra and Odisha

Hatsun is strengthening its presence in existing markets while expanding into newer markets, including Maharashtra and Odisha. The company has also highlighted continued investment in its procurement, processing and distribution capabilities.

Management reported encouraging consumer demand across dairy products, cultured products and ice creams. These categories provide opportunities to broaden the product portfolio, although their contribution to future growth will depend on market execution and cost management.

What the Results Mean for India's Dairy Industry

Hatsun's Q2 performance presents a mixed picture for the dairy sector. Revenue growth of nearly 20% signals commercial momentum, while the slower increase in EBITDA and the decline in margin demonstrate the importance of controlling costs.

For dairy processors, the challenge is not simply to sell more products. It is to convert sales growth into sustainable earnings while maintaining reliable milk procurement, efficient processing and competitive consumer pricing.

The key takeaway: In a cost-sensitive dairy market, revenue growth tells only part of the story. Protecting margins while expanding volumes may be just as important for long-term business performance.
