Gujarat Factory Busted for Fake Milk With Urea & Detergent
Authorities in Gujarat have uncovered a major food fraud operation after seizing adulterated milk from a local factory that was found to be mixing urea and detergent into milk being sold in the market. The scam was uncovered during a targeted raid by food safety officials acting on consumer complaints, revealing a systematic operation that compromised milk quality and public health.
Investigators reported that the adulterants — urea to artificially increase protein estimates and detergent to mimic the foaming characteristics of higher-fat milk — were being blended directly into raw milk before it was packaged and distributed to retailers in the region. Both substances are toxic and unfit for human consumption, posing serious health risks including gastrointestinal distress and longer-term toxic effects with repeated exposure.
Following the seizure, the local Food Safety Department has registered a case under the Food Safety and Standards Act, with arrests expected as part of the ongoing probe into the supply chain and responsible individuals. Officials reaffirmed that food adulteration is a punishable offence with stringent penalties, and stressed that rigorous enforcement will continue to safeguard consumers.
