Govt Push to Strengthen Dairy Cooperatives
The Government of India has outlined key initiatives to strengthen cooperative-led dairy development, noting that most District Cooperative Milk Unions and State Milk Federations currently procure milk within their respective states, although some have begun expanding beyond state boundaries. However, no formal assessment has yet been conducted on the impact of inter-state competition on the financial viability and procurement capacity of these cooperatives.
To address structural challenges and enhance farmer benefits, an initiative has been launched to integrate Milk Collection Centres (MCCs) and Milk Pooling Points (MPPs) under a cooperative framework, covering operations across 22 states (MCCs) and 9 states (MPPs) associated with Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation and National Dairy Development Board.
Under this initiative, around 45,000 MCCs/MPPs are proposed to be converted into Multi-Purpose Village Cooperative Societies (M-VCS) and enrolled as members of Sardar Patel Cooperative Dairy Federation Limited and National Cooperative Milk Producer Organisation Ltd., both multi-state cooperative bodies.
This structural shift aims to ensure assured market access, remunerative milk prices, patronage bonuses, and dividends on shareholding for dairy farmers, while also providing access to critical services such as cattle feed and veterinary support.
The move reflects the government’s broader push to strengthen cooperative federalism and protect farmer-led dairy institutions, positioning cooperatives as key drivers of inclusive growth and improved income stability in India’s dairy sector.
