The number of dairy producers in Great Britain continues to fall as farmers face mounting economic and regulatory pressures, according to the latest analysis from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). AHDB estimates that there were 6,850 dairy producers in GB as of April 2026, down from 7,040 producers in April 2025 and 7,010 in October 2025, highlighting the ongoing consolidation of the British dairy sector.
The decline follows what industry observers describe as a difficult year for dairy farmers. While milk production remains strong, many producers have faced falling milk prices, rising labour costs, increasing environmental compliance requirements and continued pressure from higher input costs. AHDB noted that producer exits typically occur during winter when feed and housing costs rise, and the latest reduction suggests these challenges continue to impact farm viability.
Despite fewer dairy farms, milk output per farm continues to increase. The average annual milk volume per farm reached an estimated 1.77 million litres during the period from April 2024 to April 2025, a 4% increase year-on-year, reflecting the trend toward larger and more efficient dairy operations. AHDB data also shows the GB milking herd stood at 1.60 million head in July 2025, while average herd sizes have continued to grow as remaining producers expand.
Industry analysts say the sector is increasingly characterized by fewer but larger farms. Many producers leaving the industry have sold cows to expanding businesses, enabling overall milk production to remain resilient despite the decline in farm numbers. However, concerns remain that ongoing cost pressures, volatile milk markets and regulatory burdens could accelerate further exits in the coming years.
AHDB has cautioned that dairy producers face an uncertain outlook, with profitability likely to depend on milk prices, input costs and market conditions. The organization noted that continued consolidation appears inevitable as dairy businesses seek greater scale and efficiency to remain competitive in an increasingly challenging operating environment.
