FSSAI Sanctions Prosecution Against Dodla Dairy Over Unsafe Full-Cream Milk Sample

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has sanctioned prosecution against Dodla Dairy Limited after a referral laboratory reportedly confirmed the presence of detergent/caustic soda in a sample of its full-cream milk. The sample was also found to have milk fat below the prescribed minimum limit, raising serious food safety and quality compliance concerns.

According to a report published by The Hans India on October 18, the regulatory action forms part of a wider crackdown on food safety violations involving three food business operators.

Referral Laboratory Confirms Food Safety Concerns

The regulatory sample of full-cream milk collected from Dodla Dairy was initially declared substandard by the Food Analyst because its milk fat content did not meet the prescribed specifications under the applicable food safety regulations.

Following an appeal by the food business operator, the sample was referred to a Referral Food Laboratory for further examination.

According to FSSAI's findings, the subsequent laboratory analysis confirmed that the sample was unsafe due to the presence of detergent/caustic soda and substandard because its milk fat content was below the prescribed minimum limit.

Based on these findings, the competent authority sanctioned prosecution against Dodla Dairy under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

FSSAI Expands Regulatory Action Against Food Businesses

Dodla Dairy is among three companies against which FSSAI has sanctioned prosecution for serious food safety violations.

The other companies are:

  • Surya Food & Agro Ltd: Manufacturer of Priyagold biscuits, facing prosecution over the use of bran intended for cattle feed in biscuit manufacturing, along with other reported hygiene and operational deficiencies.
  • UEIR Organic Foods Pvt. Ltd.: Facing prosecution after laboratory analysis of yellow raisins reportedly confirmed pesticide-related violations, including residues exceeding prescribed limits.

FSSAI has also issued notices to three other food business operators over regulatory concerns.

The authority has reiterated its zero-tolerance approach towards food safety violations and compromises affecting public health.

What This Means for the Dairy Industry

The case highlights the importance of stringent quality assurance, regulatory compliance and independent laboratory testing throughout the dairy value chain.

For dairy processors, maintaining product integrity requires effective raw material controls, validated testing procedures, hygienic manufacturing practices and consistent verification of finished products against applicable food safety standards.

It also reinforces the importance of traceability, documented quality-control systems and prompt corrective action whenever a product fails to meet regulatory requirements.

Food Safety and Consumer Confidence Remain Critical

Milk is a daily staple consumed by millions of households. Regulatory findings involving milk quality can therefore have implications extending beyond an individual product sample, bringing renewed attention to testing protocols, manufacturing oversight and consumer confidence.

The prosecution sanction marks a significant regulatory development. However, the final legal outcome will depend on the subsequent proceedings before the competent judicial authority.
