FSSAI mandates licenses for 2,036 dairies
In a major crackdown following recent milk adulteration concerns, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has made it mandatory for 2,036 dairy units and milk suppliers in East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, to obtain licenses, tightening regulatory oversight across the local dairy trade. The move comes amid heightened scrutiny after serious adulteration incidents in the region, which have raised public health concerns and triggered stricter enforcement measures.
Authorities have directed all dairy units, including milk vendors, collection centres, and supply chain participants, to comply with FSSAI norms, failing which strict legal action will be initiated. The enforcement aims to ensure that only licensed and regulated operators are involved in milk procurement, processing, and distribution, thereby improving traceability and accountability in the dairy ecosystem.
The directive is part of a broader effort to curb adulteration, enhance food safety, and restore consumer confidence, especially after recent contamination cases that led to hospitalisations and fatalities in the district.
Officials emphasized that the licensing requirement will help strengthen monitoring, standardize quality checks, and prevent illegal or unregulated dairy operations, marking a significant step toward safer milk supply chains in one of India’s key dairy regions.
