The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued show-cause notices to Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Nestlé Health Science and several e-commerce companies over allegedly non-compliant advertising and health claims associated with Celevida GLP+, a nutritional product marketed for people undergoing GLP-1/GIP therapies.
The notices ask the companies to explain why regulatory action should not be initiated under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the relevant rules and regulations.
According to reports, the action also covers Tirupati Wellness Pvt. Ltd., Flipkart India Pvt. Ltd., Amazon Seller Services Pvt. Ltd. and Netmeds Healthcare Ltd. The regulator flagged the product’s promotional claims and its association with therapies used in diabetes and obesity management.
FSSAI Questions Muscle-Preservation Claims
Celevida GLP+ was promoted as providing high-protein support for lean muscle preservation during GLP-1/GIP therapies. FSSAI reportedly raised concerns that the advertising could imply suitability for a specific physiological condition and could mislead consumers about the product’s benefits.
The product was introduced by Dr. Reddy’s and Nestlé Health Science in India in May 2026. According to the companies’ launch information, the formulation contains whey protein isolate, essential amino acids and 27 nutrients, including vitamins A and D and calcium.
The regulatory action concerns the claims and their presentation to consumers. A show-cause notice is not, by itself, a final determination that the product is unsafe or that the companies have violated the law.
E-Commerce Platforms Also Under Scrutiny
FSSAI’s notices extend to platforms involved in listing or selling the product, bringing online food and nutrition supplement advertising under the spotlight.
The development highlights the compliance responsibilities of manufacturers, brand owners and online marketplaces. Health-related marketing must meet applicable food-safety and advertising requirements, particularly when product claims refer to clinical therapies or specific physiological outcomes.
Implications for the Nutrition and Dairy Industry
The case is relevant to the wider nutrition sector, including businesses developing high-protein products and specialised nutritional formulations. Demand for protein-rich products has encouraged companies to explore new consumer segments, but claims about muscle maintenance, therapeutic use and health outcomes require careful regulatory review.
For dairy-based nutrition businesses, the development underscores the importance of substantiating product claims, ensuring compliant labelling and aligning digital marketing with applicable FSSAI regulations.
The next significant development will be the companies’ responses to the notices and any subsequent decision by the regulator.
