Farmers Seek Revised Milk Quality Norms in Tamil Nadu

The Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Paadhugappu Sangam has urged the Tamil Nadu government to revise the quality specifications used for milk procurement, seeking a reduction in the prescribed standards from 4.3% Fat and 8.2% SNF to 4.0% Fat and 8.0% SNF, while fixing the milk procurement rate at ₹44 per litre. The demand was made by the association’s state secretary of its IT wing, M. Gopalakrishnan, who said the group had submitted a petition to Milk and Dairy Development Minister C. Vijayalakshmi.

According to the association, under the current procurement announcement, milk producers would receive a maximum of ₹41.35 per litre. The farmers’ body is therefore seeking revised quality parameters along with a procurement price of ₹44, arguing that the existing specifications should be updated to better reflect prevailing milk production conditions.

The demand comes amid continuing discussions in Tamil Nadu over milk procurement prices and quality-linked payments, with procurement specifications directly affecting the price received by dairy farmers. The issue is particularly significant for producers supplying milk to organised dairy systems, where fat and SNF levels are key parameters in determining procurement value.
