Fake Ghee Mafia Eyeing Indore as Hub – Big Adulteration Alert

Investigations in Indore have uncovered a large‐scale adulteration network diverting cheap vegetable oils and fats into ghee supply chains. Officials say the racket spans several local instances, with an estimated 15-20 % of ghee circulating in the market potentially fake — a figure that raises alarm for both public health and brand trust. The supply chain appears to originate from hinterland sites in Gujarat and Rajasthan, with Indore emerging as a processing and redistribution hub.

During recent raids, authorities confiscated multiple storage units containing unbranded vegetable‐oil mixes in ghee jars and wrappers mimicking major brands. The modus operandi involves purchasing off‐spec fats from border states, repackaging them under popular ghee labels and distributing them onward to rural and urban retail networks. According to local dairy officials, this exposes a critical vulnerability in the regional ghee segment, especially given rising prices.

For the Indian dairy sector — especially branded ghee producers and cooperatives — the message is clear: effective supply-chain traceability, rigorous lab testing and rapid recall mechanisms are no longer optional.
