Hundreds of litres of milk were poured onto the floor of a dairy cooperative society in Narayanapura, Nelamangala taluk, Bengaluru, as farmers protested the non-payment of their annual Dasara bonus and government subsidies.
According to The Times of India, farmers arrived at the Narayanapura Milk Producers Cooperative Society at around 5 a.m. on October 19 to deliver milk. After waiting for more than two-and-a-half hours without a resolution, they emptied their milk cans across the premises at approximately 7:30 a.m.
Why Did Dairy Farmers Protest?
Farmers alleged that the cooperative management had repeatedly promised to release the annual Dasara bonus but failed to fulfil its commitments. They also raised concerns about the handling of government incentive payments and alleged financial irregularities involving members’ savings.
The protesting farmers demanded an inquiry and an audit of the cooperative’s functioning. They warned that the agitation could intensify if their pending bonuses and savings were not released.
What This Means for the Dairy Industry
The incident highlights the importance of transparent cooperative management, timely farmer payments and accountability in dairy procurement systems. For milk producers operating on tight margins, delayed incentives and uncertainty over payments can create additional financial pressure.
The protest also raises a broader question for the dairy sector: How can dairy cooperatives maintain farmer trust when payment commitments remain unresolved?
Reliable payment systems and transparent financial practices are essential to sustaining farmer participation and strengthening the cooperative dairy model.
