The Bel Group and Bel Brands USA announced Dec. 8 the launch of two new alternative dairy options: Nurishh animal-free cream cheese spread and The Laughing Cow Plant-Based.

Bel created its Nurishh Incredible Dairy Animal Free Cream Cheese Spread Alternative in collaboration with Perfect Day, Berkeley, Calif., which developed a precision-fermented protein for use in animal-free dairy products.

Nurishh is Bel’s first alternative dairy brand. Its new animal-free cream cheese contains real dairy proteins and is made without using any cows. The lactose-free product will be available beginning Jan. 1, 2023, when it debuts with three flavors: Original, Strawberry and Chive & Onion. Nurishh cream cheeses will be available at Kroger stores throughout the United States for $4.99.

“At Bel, we are determined to conquer new territories, to create the innovations that will shape the food of tomorrow for the benefit of our consumers,” said Cécile Béliot, chief executive officer of the Bel Group. “This is our role and our responsibility as a major player in the food industry. I am personally convinced that to meet the triple challenge of more sustainable, healthy and accessible food for all, innovation and bringing together talents are key. This partnership with Perfect Day is the perfect embodiment of our co-innovation approach: the meeting of Perfect Day’s unique technology and Bel’s historic and pioneering know-how.”

The Laughing Cow Plant-Based cheeses are certified vegan and were developed to duplicate the “spreadability” associated with the brand’s original dairy-based product. Bel shared that the plant-based versions will soon arrive at select US retailers in both Original and Garlic & Herb flavors for $5.49.

The company previously launched Babybel Plant-Based and Boursin Dairy-Free as dairy alternative cheeses. Per Bel, it works closely with consumers to develop alternatives that live up to “cheese lovers’ expectations” in terms of taste, texture and richness.

“At Bel Brands USA, we’re proud to offer a wide array of products for cheese lovers everywhere regardless of their dietary and lifestyle preferences,” said Shannon Maher, chief marketing officer. “Building on the success and consumer excitement from Babybel Plant-Based and Boursin Dairy-Free, we’re thrilled to unveil new innovations from both our most well-known brand with the launch of The Laughing Cow Plant-Based as well as leveraging new technology through a partnership with Perfect Day to launch our breakthrough animal-free offering with Nurishh Incredible Dairy. When it comes to all of our offerings, fans don’t have to compromise on taste, flavor or enjoyment.”

Perfect Day CEO and co-founder Ryan Pandya said Bel’s launch of Nurishh animal-free cream cheese will help introduce more consumers to Perfect Day’s innovation.

“Consumers around the country will now be able to try kinder, greener animal-free cream cheese and make a delicious choice for the future of our planet,” Mr. Pandya said.

As Bel ramps up its production of alternative dairy cheeses, it is partnering not only with Perfect Day, but also Paris-based Standing Ovation and biotech firm Superbrewed Food, New Castle, Del.

Bel Brands USA’s plant-based acceleration director, Florian Decaux, said the company is leveraging new and evolving technologies to make products that meet consumers’ needs.

“By expanding our portfolio and entering strategic partnerships, we are able to act on and embrace key insights, live responsibly, and provide delicious food that enables people to lead a good life,” Mr. Decaux said.
