Banas Dairy to Open ₹325-Crore Cattle Breeding Research Centre

Banas Dairy is set to strengthen India's indigenous livestock breeding capabilities with the inauguration of the Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre (BBBRC) at Bhildi, Gujarat, on October 30, 2026. Developed at an investment of ₹325 crore, the facility aims to improve cattle genetics, enhance milk productivity and support livestock farmers through scientific breeding practices.

The 127-acre centre has been developed by Banas Dairy with technical guidance from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and support under the Centre's Rashtriya Gokul Mission. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the facility during his Gujarat visit.

Target of 25,000 High-Quality Embryos Annually

The centre aims to produce 25,000 superior embryos every year using advanced reproductive technologies, including ovum pick-up, in-vitro fertilisation (OPU-IVF) and embryo transfer.

These technologies can help multiply animals with desirable genetic traits, accelerating the improvement of future cattle generations compared with conventional breeding alone.

Focus on Indigenous Cattle and Buffalo Breeds

The facility will focus on indigenous cattle breeds, including Kankrej, Gir, Sahiwal and Tharparkar, alongside buffalo breeds such as Mehsani, Banni, Jaffarabadi and Murrah.

The objective is to improve genetic quality and milk-producing potential while supporting the conservation and wider adoption of India's recognised livestock breeds.

Higher Productivity, Lower Cost Pressures

The initiative comes as livestock farmers face rising animal-rearing costs and constraints on fodder availability. Improving productivity per animal could help farmers increase milk output without relying solely on larger herds.

Banas Dairy has also indicated that disease-free breeding bulls, quality semen and embryos will be made available to livestock farmers at affordable rates. The expected benefits will depend on successful breeding outcomes, suitable feeding and effective animal management.

Strengthening India's Dairy Genetics Infrastructure

The project highlights the growing role of dairy cooperatives in investing in scientific breeding infrastructure and improving the productivity of indigenous livestock.

By expanding access to advanced reproductive technologies, BBBRC could support genetic improvement, strengthen farm-level efficiency and contribute to the long-term competitiveness of India's dairy sector.

Improving the genetic potential of dairy animals offers a pathway to higher productivity, but sustained gains will depend on combining scientific breeding with sound nutrition, animal health and farm management.
