Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Telangana on October 4 to inaugurate works related to a major dairy project at Toopran in Medak district. The project is expected to strengthen the state's dairy infrastructure and expand opportunities for milk producers.
The project is associated with Sabar Dairy, a member of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets dairy products under the Amul brand. Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy announced the programme and highlighted its potential to strengthen Telangana's dairy ecosystem.
Proposed Milk Processing and Product Capacity
The dairy facility is planned with a milk-processing capacity of 5 lakh litres per day. Its proposed product-manufacturing capacities include:
- Curd: 200 metric tonnes per day
- Buttermilk: 30 kilolitres per day
- Lassi: 30 kilolitres per day
- Paneer: 10 metric tonnes per day
- Ice cream: 50 kilolitres per day
- Fresh sweets: 3 metric tonnes per day
- Bakery products: 5 metric tonnes per day
- Ghee: 5 metric tonnes per day
The ice-cream facility has scope for expansion to 1 lakh litres per day, while fresh-sweets production capacity is also mentioned as expandable to 5 metric tonnes per day.
Strengthening Telangana’s Dairy Cooperative Network
The project is expected to support milk procurement, processing and value addition while creating additional market opportunities for dairy farmers. Its development is aligned with the broader objective of strengthening cooperative-led dairy infrastructure in the state.
The initiative also supports the objectives of White Revolution 2.0, launched on September 19, 2024, which aims to expand dairy cooperatives, improve market access and increase milk procurement through cooperatives.
According to Kishan Reddy, the programme targets a 50% increase in milk procurement through dairy cooperatives by 2028–29 and the establishment of 75,000 new dairy cooperative societies across the country by 2029. Telangana's target includes 1,525 new societies.
The proposed Sabar Dairy facility represents an important step in expanding organised milk processing and value-added dairy production in Telangana, with potential benefits for farmers, cooperative institutions and the state's dairy supply chain.
