Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated a new annexe building for Aavin’s State Central Laboratory at the Madhavaram dairy complex in Chennai, strengthening the cooperative dairy federation’s infrastructure for milk quality and environmental testing.
The laboratory annexe was constructed at a cost of ₹2.23 crore by the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation, which operates under the Aavin brand. The facility is designed to support quality testing for Aavin and district-level cooperative milk producers’ unions.
According to reports, the laboratory will conduct milk and dairy-product quality tests, along with drinking-water testing in accordance with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) requirements. It will also undertake wastewater and effluent testing in line with regulations prescribed by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB).
The facility is intended to improve the speed and accuracy of testing, supporting quality monitoring across the cooperative dairy network. Reliable laboratory testing is important for assessing milk quality, verifying compliance with food-safety standards and monitoring water used in dairy operations.
Madhavaram Dairy Handles 4.5 Lakh Litres Daily
During his visit, Chief Minister Vijay inspected operations at the existing Madhavaram dairy unit, which handles approximately 4.5 lakh litres of milk per day, according to reports. He also reviewed ongoing construction work at the complex and directed officials to complete the project within the stipulated timeline.
The Madhavaram facility has played a role in Chennai’s milk supply for decades. The additional laboratory infrastructure comes as Aavin seeks to strengthen its operational capacity and respond to the region’s dairy requirements.
New ₹152.3 Crore Dairy Plant Under Construction
The Chief Minister also reviewed construction of a new modern dairy facility at Madhavaram, with an estimated investment of ₹152.26 crore and planned milk-handling capacity of 7 lakh litres per day.
The proposed facility is intended to expand Aavin’s milk-handling infrastructure in Chennai. Its planned capacity is higher than that of the existing Madhavaram unit, although the new plant remains under construction.
The visit took place amid reports of milk-supply complaints in Chennai and neighbouring areas. Officials were instructed to expedite the ongoing construction work, while the new laboratory annexe represents a separate investment in testing and quality-control infrastructure.
For the dairy sector, the development highlights the importance of combining processing-capacity expansion with laboratory capability. Strong testing systems for milk, dairy products, water and effluent can support regulatory compliance and help cooperative dairies maintain quality across procurement and processing operations.
