India’s National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a deadly milk adulteration incident in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district, where 16 people have died since mid-February 2026 after consuming contaminated milk. At least four others remain under medical treatment, with symptoms linked to acute renal dysfunction and multi-organ failure.

Investigations have traced the suspected source of contamination to a dairy unit in Narsapuram village, which supplied milk to over 100 households in the affected areas, including Lalacheruvu, Chowdeswaranagar and Swarupanagar. Authorities believe the milk was adulterated with a toxic substance, possibly ethylene glycol, commonly used as a coolant, leading to severe health complications.

The NHRC has issued notices to the Andhra Pradesh government, seeking a detailed report within two weeks, including the status of victims, investigation progress, and compensation provided to affected families. The incident has raised serious concerns around food safety, regulatory oversight, and public health risks in India’s dairy supply chain.
