Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is undergoing a major transformation from a traditional engineering and project-execution company into a diversified technology-led enterprise, with its recently won ₹15,000-crore AI factory contract forming a key part of this strategy. The company is using its engineering, infrastructure and financial capabilities to build businesses across electronics, semiconductors, green hydrogen, battery storage, defence technology and potentially rare-earth magnets, while moving progressively towards technology ownership.
L&T's evolution has deep industrial roots, including its earlier involvement in manufacturing dairy-processing machinery, but its current expansion is aimed at sectors expected to shape India's future industrial and technology landscape. The AI factory project involves building India's largest AI infrastructure facility for Together AI, with 10,000 NVIDIA B300 GPUs and a planned gigawatt-scale infrastructure site in Chennai.
The company's diversification also extends to strategic manufacturing and infrastructure opportunities. L&T is exploring semiconductor-related businesses, green hydrogen, battery storage and defence technology, while it is also considering participation in India's ₹7,280-crore rare-earth magnet manufacturing scheme, which seeks to establish 6,000 metric tonnes of domestic production capacity and reduce dependence on China, which accounts for about 90% of global rare-earth magnet production.
The broader strategy reflects a shift from simply executing large infrastructure projects to owning capabilities in high-growth and strategically important technologies. For industries such as dairy, the story is also a reminder of how engineering companies can evolve with changing industrial demand—from food-processing equipment to advanced manufacturing, digital infrastructure and AI-led facilities.
