New research is adding fresh perspective to the ongoing dairy versus plant-based nutrition debate, with scientists reporting that cow’s milk may provide advantages for bone health compared to some plant-based alternatives. A recent review by researchers at Edith Cowan University in Australia found that cow’s milk offers benefits for bone strength and nutrient absorption due to its unique “milk matrix” — the natural structure that combines proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds. Researchers noted that milk contains more than 100 nutrients and bioactive substances that work together to support health.
Meanwhile, a separate study published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research found that cow’s milk improved bone formation markers and increased bone density measures in mice when compared with soy-based beverages, including higher trabecular density, bone area, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium levels. Experts also highlighted that many plant-based milk alternatives contain lower levels of protein, calcium, iodine, and vitamin B12 unless fortified, while nutritional composition can vary significantly between products.
Although plant-based beverages remain popular among consumers seeking dairy alternatives, researchers emphasize that further human studies are needed to better understand their long-term effects on bone health and nutrient intake. The findings contribute to the broader discussion around dairy nutrition, functional foods, and the role of milk in supporting skeletal health. (ECU)
