A 33-weeks-pregnant charity worker expecting twins staged a one-woman protest outside Cardiff Market in Wales to campaign against dairy consumption and what she described as cruelty to calves in the dairy industry. Kate Werner, senior campaigns manager for the PETA Foundation, appeared nearly naked, wearing little more than earrings resembling cattle ear tags, chains around her feet and a milk-pumping bra. She urged shoppers to “leave cows and their calves in peace” by choosing a vegan lifestyle.
Werner argued that cows produce milk after giving birth to nourish their calves and criticised practices including repeated artificial insemination and separation of calves from their mothers. She claimed calves in the dairy industry are often separated from their mothers within hours of birth and said male calves are usually slaughtered for veal, while female calves may remain in the dairy system until they are no longer productive.
PETA says animals are capable of experiencing pain, hunger and thirst and argues that they should not be used for food, clothing, experimentation or entertainment. The organisation says it campaigns through public education, research, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement and protests, while maintaining that it supports non-violence and does not advocate actions that harm humans or animals. The Cardiff demonstration is part of PETA’s broader animal-rights campaigning.
The organisation is also campaigning against the use of bearskin fur in the UK King’s Guards’ ceremonial caps, arguing that faux bear fur could replace the material. The milk protest has also triggered debate among readers over dairy farming practices, animal welfare, milk consumption and the affordability of plant-based alternatives. (Nation.Cymru)
