Dairy dept in Wayanad has revealed significant cattle losses

A preliminary assessment by the Animal Husbandry department has revealed significant losses to the animal husbandry and dairy sectors in the landslide-hit areas of Wayanad district. Following a review by Minister for Animal Husbandry J. Chinchurani in Wayanad on Thursday, the department reported that among the 40 dairy farmers in the Chooralmala dairy cooperative, 14 are believed to be among the disaster victims.

Ms. Chinchurani, during her review in Wayanad, issued directives to provide urgent assistance to the affected farmers. Department officials have been instructed to implement measures for adequate compensation to the farmers.

Approximately 100 heads of cattle have been reported lost, and 300 acres of fodder grass destroyed in the disaster. The department indicated that the full extent of the losses would be known as relief and rescue operations continue in the coming days. The Wayanad district has reported a decrease of 12,420 litres in milk procurement following the disaster on July 30.

Milma, Kerala Feeds, Kerala Livestock Development Board, and the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University have been tasked with providing assistance to the farmers in the affected areas.
